Birds of the Philippines
Photos and videos of wild birds found in the Philippines. We travel all over the Philippines to document and take pictures of birds. Our goal is to make this site a resource of information and images about wild birds of the Philippines.
Broad-billed Sandpiper
BROAD-BILLED SANDPIPER
Limcola falcinellus
Family Scolopacidae
L165mm (6 1/2")
migrant, uncommon
Bird # 358 - March 2012
This is a small sandpiper with a long bill and white eyebrow. It looks quite nondescript and can be easily overlooked. It can be identified in the field by its small size, relatively short legs that give it a "close to the ground" appearance, white eyebrow that gives it a snipe-like appearance, and long black bill that is curved down at the tip. The Broad-billed Sandpipers were seen towards Coconut Island, some distance away from the main Observation Deck. The water there was shallower than at the Observation Deck.
Many thanks to Cebu-based British birder Steve Young who pointed out these birds to us!
