Nordmann's Greenshank

NORDMANN'S GREENSHANK
Tringa guttifer
Family Scolopacidae

accidental, migrant, rare
L 240mm (9 1/2")
Bird #512 - January 2018

This is a rare visitor to the Philippines during migratory season. Its usual habitat is coastal mud flats, shallow fishponds, and salt pans. The Kennedy guide describes it as solitary.

It looks similar to the Common Greenshank which is the more common and usually seen in the same habitat. Both species have yellowish legs. the Normann's has shorter legs and looks more squat and heavily built. The distinguishing field marks of the Nordmann's are the two-toned bill, thicker bill, white rump and tail, pale supercilium that extends past the eye, and top of the head less mottled in non-breeding plumage.

This was the trip where we didn't find a Spoonbill Sandpiper! Good thing we got this other target bird. The Nordmann's has been seen in Tibsoc for several seasons.
