Ruff (Reeve)
RUFF (REEVE)
Philomachus pugnax
Scolopacidae Family
Bird #223 - December 2009
This bird is described in the Kennedy guide as "rare". The first one we saw was with a group of Common Greenshanks. It stood out from the group because it has darker feathers with a bigger pattern. It also has orange legs with black toes and a shorter bill than the Greenshanks. We saw it eating snails. Later on, in a different pond we saw 6 Ruffs.
This bird has a different name for the male and female. The male is a Ruff and the female is a Reeve.
