Birds of the Philippines
Photos and videos of wild birds found in the Philippines. We travel all over the Philippines to document and take pictures of birds. Our goal is to make this site a resource of information and images about wild birds of the Philippines.
Common Hill Myna
COMMON HILL MYNA
Gracula religiosa palawanensis
Family Sturnidae
resident, uncommon and becoming rare
L 265 (10 1/2")
Bird #216 - November 2009
This bird is uncommon and becoming rare. It is a Philippine endemic race. It is popular as a pet because it is a good mimic and can be taught to speak. Unfortunately many of the birds in the pet trade are taken from the wild.
It is a large bird, about 10 1/2" long, and they usually travel in pairs or in flocks.
After previously seeing only caged individuals, it was a thrill to unexpectedly come across this pair in the wild! We had been joking throughout our trip about wanting to see Hill Mynas, but didn't really expect to see them since they are uncommon.
