This is a Philippine endemic. It is small, measuring only about 3 3/4" long. It has a metallic violet forehead, metallic green wings, olive green back and bright yellow breast with a small orange patch. Like other sunbirds, it flies around very quickly.
The proposal by Hosner, Nyári & Moyle to treat two the two races of Metallic Winged Sunbird as separate species. The proposed names :
Aethopyga (pulcherrima) jeffreyi Luzon Sunbird
Aethopyga (pulcherrima) decorosa Bohol Sunbird
In the version 3.5 release of the IOC the name was slightly changed from the proposed name to Aethopyga jefferyi Named after Jeffery Whitehead father of John Whitehead. In the IOC version 3.5 (sept 30, 2013) Luzon Sunbird was split from Metallic Winged Sunbird.
