Purple Throated Sunbird
PURPLE THROATED SUNBIRD
Leptocoma sperata
Nectariniidae Family
endemic, common
L 99 mm (4")
Bird #81 - December 2008
This is Nectarinia sperata in the Kennedy guide. It is now Leptocoma sperata a Philippine endemic with subspecies henkei, sperata, trochilus and juliae, following the split of extralimital Van Hasselt's Sunbird Leptocoma brasiliana. (This is from the WBCP Checklist 2013)
We first saw this bird in Makiling. Tina identified it for us, but we were not able to take a picture the first time. On our third sighting we had a few pictures. On our fourth encounter, still in Makiling we saw four of them and were able to get captures of this very skittish bird.
Its interesting that they were in a mixed flock of sunbirds, Olive-backed, Plain-throated and these guys.
