White's Thrush
WHITE'S THRUSH
Zoothera aurea
Family Turdidae
L 280 mm (11")
migrant, uncommon
Bird # 388 - December 2012
This bird is listed as Scaly Ground-Thrush Zoothera dauma in A Guide to the Birds of the Philippines. In the bird list of the Wild Bird Club which we are following for the most part, it is listed as White's Thrush Zoothera aurea. It says in the Kennedy guide that "Philippine and Bornean migrants are the race aurea. However, some authors consider this a full species Zoothera aureaseparate from Zoothera dauma of the Himalayas, Sumatra, and Java."
It is a big bird that walks on the ground like a dove. When we saw it, it was secretive and would walk away when it sensed people. We also saw it several times flying into trees. It's scale pattern is quite distinctive.
