Red -throated Pipit

RED THROATED PIPIT
Anthus cervinus
Motoacillidae Family

Bird # 448 - December 2013

L 152 mm (6 inches)
migrant

This is a rare migrant. It likes to eat insects and grass seeds. We saw it on a dry field near the coastline. It seemed to prefer the greener taller grass to the drier areas.

The group of 20 we saw would fly together and were very vocal.

Some had red faces and throats while others had less coloration. The deep black streaks made the bird easy to identify and easily set it apart from the Oriental Skylarks and Richard's Pipits that were in the same area.

The flight behavior is also very different from the Richard's. It has a portion of its flight where it seems to hover/ glide down.
