Richard's Pipit
RICHARD'S PIPIT
Anthus richardi
Family Motacillidae
Bird #525 - November 2019
The bird that is labelled "Richard's Pipit" in the Kennedy guide was part of a spit from Anthus novaseelandiae. The ones that were formerly known as Richard's Pipit are now Paddyfield Pipit Anthus rufulus. After that split Richard's Pipit, which used to be a very common bird become a rare, accidental migrant. It is also difficult to tell Richard's Pipit and Paddyfield Pipit apart in the field. The Richard's are larger and have no black in front of the eye. They are mainly identified and told apart from Paddyfield by their call.
Rob Hutchinson and Irene Dy recorded the first sighting of a Richard's Pipit in the Basco airfield in October 2013. We were with them during the trip but did not see the bird.
In 2018 we were in Batanes with Rob and he was checking the airfield for Richard's Pipit. We spent a lot of time with a bird that did not call and turned out to be a Paddyfield Pipit. In 2019 we were back in Batanes with Christian Perez. Rob spotted a likely Richard's Pipit. This time it called! Christian recorded the call and we were able to get photos.
