Birds of the Philippines
Photos and videos of wild birds found in the Philippines. We travel all over the Philippines to document and take pictures of birds. Our goal is to make this site a resource of information and images about wild birds of the Philippines.
Java Sparrow
JAVA SPARROW
Padda oryzivora
Estrildidae Family
Length 142mm (5 1/2")
Resident- Uncommon
Bird #214 - October 2009
We saw this bird in UP thanks to Doc Mando and Tina M. October 27, 2009.
This was really amazing! We got to see the couple do a mating dance and then mate!
These birds are plentiful in Ilocos Norte. We saw them many times in the same areas as the Red-bellied Munia and Scaly-breasted Munia. They were in the field where we went to look for the Yellow Bunting and in the Laoag River bank. We also saw them in the Paoay church when we went there for lunch.
We previously said on this site: "These birds seem to be quite uncommon in the areas we have visited. We have only seen them in two places. Based on these two encounters, it seems they are not very shy. Much bigger than the munias."but it turns out that they are common in Laoag.
