Lowland White Eye
LOWLAND WHITE EYE
Zosterops meyeni
Zosteropidae Family
meyeni length 102 mm (4")
batanis length 120 mm (4 1/2")
Endemic-Common
Bird # 24 - June 2008
This is a small, fast, yellow bird that is often found at the tops of trees. Good thing it has a very distinctive white ring around its eye that makes it easier to distinguish from other small, fast, yellow birds. We usually hear them before we see them. They fly in flocks from treetop to treetop, all the while making twittering calls. We first saw this bird in our neighborhood. This bird is a Philippine endemic.
There are two races of this bird. Meyeni which is found all over the Philippines and batanis which is found in the Batanes group of islands. We saw a lot of batanis on our trip to Batan and Sabtang. They are quite numerous and easy to view.
