This Philippine resident is an amazing looking bird! The patten on its neck is very intricate and looks like a gnarled and veiny piece of wood. And then the female has that spotted "cap" on it's head. And then, to top it all off, it has bright red wings that look like a flowing red cape!
This bird was originally called Greater Flameback Chrysocolaptes lucidus. The species was split into Luzon Flameback Chrysocolaptes haematribon, Buff-spotted Flameback Chrysocolaptes lucidus (C.l. rufopunctatusSamar, Biliran, Leyte, Calicoan, Bohol, Panaon; C. l. lucidus in Basilan and W. Mindanao, C.l. montanus in C & E Mindanao, Samal;), Yellow-faced Flameback Chrysocolaptes xanthocephalus in Ticao, Masbate, Panay, Guimaras, Negros, and Red-headed Flameback Chrysocolaptes eryhtrocephalus in Balabac, Palawan, Calamian group
