We first saw this bird in UP when we were there for a guided birdwatching trip with the Wild Bird Club of the Philippines. This bird is also found in Alabang. We were able to spot it when we heard it tapping on the trunk of a tree.
There are 7 races:
validirostris in Catanaduanes, Lubang, Luzon, Marinduque and Mindoro
leytensis in Bohol, Calicoan, Leyte and Samar
fulvifasciatus in Basilan, Dinagat, and Mindanao
ramsayi in Bongao, Jolo, Papahag, Sanga Sanga, Sibutu, and Tawi-tawi
siasiensis in Siasi
maculatus in Cebu, Gigantes, Guimaras, Negros, and Panay
menageri in Sibuyan
