This Philippine endemic was part of the Greater Flameback species and was recently split. The Red-headed Flameback Chrysocolaptes eryhtrocephalus can be found in Balabac, Palawan, Calamian group.

Told from the similar looking Spot-throated Flameback (formerly known as Common Flameback) in Palawan by the pale color of the beak, red on throat and face,  and the spots on the upper breast
