Birds of the Philippines
Photos and videos of wild birds found in the Philippines. We travel all over the Philippines to document and take pictures of birds. Our goal is to make this site a resource of information and images about wild birds of the Philippines.
Canon EOS 5D Mk3
I have been waiting for the replacement of our favorite 5dmk2 for some time. We really liked the files produced by the 5dmk2 and we could never replace them until a better sensor came along. Sylvia and I don't really like to do heavy photo shop work so we like a camera with a clean sensor so we have less work to do after taking hundreds and hundreds of photos after a trip.
The 7D is a decent camera but it required more steps in post process to get the best out of it. So we took it out of our gear bag.
The 1DMk4 is a great camera, but it is heavy and costly and it seemed to us that the files were not of a higher quality than the 5dmk2. But it had terrific features. I was very tempted, but we like full frame cameras so that always stopped me.
Finally, Canon made a full frame camera with a better sensor. The 5dmk3. It is basically a grown up version of the 5dmk2 basic formula.
Key changes:
1. It now sports a much cleaner 22.3 MP sensor. A 100-25,600 native ISO range.
2. Advanced 61 point Auto Focus system taken from the top of the line 1DX.
3. It shoots at 6fps vs the previous 3.9fps.
In this gallery we will talk about some features which we like and how they help produce the picture.
These initial photos were just taken in our garden and down the road from our house the first day after getting the camera. We will update these pictures with better ones in the future.
I just tried using the 500mm f4 with a 2x in live view. It can focus in live view mode.
We are so glad that Canon decided to go for a cleaner sensor instead of more Mega Pixels. I can't wait to take pictures with this new body.
There are so many more features in this new camera and 400 pages in the instruction manual. It will take us a few months to get used to all the new features.

Another example of a Glossy Swiftlet in flight. I have never been able to take these guys before. I was thinking of getting a 1dmk4 as my bird in flight camera. Now I think the 5dmk3 is more than up to the challenge. This is probably one of the more difficult birds to take in flight and it did it quite effortlessly and with a zoom lens and not a prime.
I have never seen the feather detail of a flying Glossy Swiftlet in any of my pictures until now.
