Birds of the Philippines

Photos and videos of wild birds found in the Philippines. We travel all over the Philippines to document and take pictures of birds. Our goal is to make this site a resource of information and images about wild birds of the Philippines.

 1. Equipment List

Canon EOS 5D Mk3

I have been waiting for the replacement of our favorite 5dmk2 for some time. We really liked the files produced by the 5dmk2 and we could never replace them until a better sensor came along. Sylvia and I don't really like to do heavy photo shop work so we like a camera with a clean sensor so we have less work to do after taking hundreds and hundreds of photos after a trip.

The 7D is a decent camera but it required more steps in post process to get the best out of it. So we took it out of our gear bag.

The 1DMk4 is a great camera, but it is heavy and costly and it seemed to us that the files were not of a higher quality than the 5dmk2. But it had terrific features. I was very tempted, but we like full frame cameras so that always stopped me.

Finally, Canon made a full frame camera with a better sensor. The 5dmk3. It is basically a grown up version of the 5dmk2 basic formula.

Key changes:
1. It now sports a much cleaner 22.3 MP sensor. A 100-25,600 native ISO range.
2. Advanced 61 point Auto Focus system taken from the top of the line 1DX.
3. It shoots at 6fps vs the previous 3.9fps.

In this gallery we will talk about some features which we like and how they help produce the picture.

These initial photos were just taken in our garden and down the road from our house the first day after getting the camera. We will update these pictures with better ones in the future.

I just tried using the 500mm f4 with a 2x in live view. It can focus in live view mode.

We are so glad that Canon decided to go for a cleaner sensor instead of more Mega Pixels. I can't wait to take pictures with this new body.

There are so many more features in this new camera and 400 pages in the instruction manual. It will take us a few months to get used to all the new features.

The Auto Focusing was not confused by all the leaves in front of the Yellow Vented Bulbul. It acquired the target and the bird has a lot of feather detail. No photo shop processing except for cropping and putting my name. In DPP all noise reduction was removed and the raw file was converted to JPG. I think sharpness of 1 was added. The camera produces a good file even without PP manipulation.
• Shooting thru leaves and branches and aiming at the eye. Normally I would wait for a clean perch. But in this case I wanted to test if the AF could lock on the eye despite all the leaves in front.

Using Single-point Spot AF is for pinpoint focusing. The AF point is small and can thread thru all the leaves. It does not get distracted by the leaves around the bird.

Sharpness of 1 in DPP when converted from RAW to JPG otherwise untouched. No photoshop process except to add name. No noise reduction ISO 320. No crop.
 • This picture is a crop of the previous one and it shows how the Auto Focus point was locked into the eye. I think this pinpoint AF will make forest birds easier to photograph.

Selective sharpening to offset the deep crop.

Notice how clean the picture is despite the deep crop and no noise reduction.

I was using a small 70-300 lens and this photo is deeply cropped. This is not a perfect bird in flight, but....well, thats a small bird. This bird is a Glossy Swiftlet only 3 3/4 inches traveling super fast. Needless to say the butterfly or moth is less than 1 inch.

I used all the 61 AF points to acquire the target. It was amazingly easy compared to what I am used to with my 5dMk2. I could never take this bird well before. I think with the 5dmk3 I will be improving our gallery of Swiftlets as well as other birds in flight.
• Another example of a Glossy Swiftlet in flight. I have never been able to take these guys before. I was thinking of getting a 1dmk4 as my bird in flight camera. Now I think the 5dmk3 is more than up to the challenge. This is probably one of the more difficult birds to take in flight and it did it quite effortlessly and with a zoom lens and not a prime.

I have never seen the feather detail of a flying Glossy Swiftlet in any of my pictures until now.

One more example of the 61 focusing points at work and the decent enough 6fps shooting speed.

This was taken at 2000 ISO and this picture has zero noise reduction and is deeply cropped. Despite that it is still very clean. A very clean sensor and a very smart AF. This was shot at 1/5000.
 • This was using all 61 AF points. Notice how the AF still tracked the almost black Swiftlet despite the tree behind. Usually dark birds are a problem for AF systems. If this camera can track a black 3+ inch bird thru trees I think it will do very well with ducks and waders.

Some noise in the leaves behind due to the heavy crop. Bird detail is still very good. Look at the face of that speeding Swiftlet. No noise reduction was used at ISO 2000.
 • Using 500mm f4 IS version 2

12,800 ISO, 1/80, f6.3

Hand held indoors. No photo shop. No noise reduction.
